Road Warriors Have Their Own Rules
If you’ve logged enough miles to know the difference between a good connection airport and a trap, you’ve earned the right to call yourself a Road Warrior. And Road Warriors don’t just wing it — they operate by a code.
After years of chasing window seats, navigating delays, and outsmarting weather systems, I’ve put together my Top 10 Rules for the Road Warrior. Learn them. Live them. Thank me later.
🔟 Rule #10 — Never Book a Connection Under 1 Hour 30 Minutes
With the new boarding times airlines have rolled out, a 45-minute connection is no longer a connection — it’s a gamble. Give yourself at least 1 hour 30 minutes minimum. Planes run late, gates change, and terminals are bigger than they look on the map. I know your time is valuable, but a small delay can easily cause you to miss a flight and that takes so much more time.
9️⃣ Rule #9 — Never Fly Through EWR in the Afternoon
Newark Liberty is a fantastic airport — in the morning. By afternoon, it becomes one of the most delay-prone airports in the country. Air traffic congestion, ground stops, and ripple delays make EWR afternoons a nightmare for connections. Route around it if you can.
8️⃣ Rule #8 — Avoid CLT After 4 PM for Any Connection
Charlotte Douglas is a workhorse hub, but after 4 PM, the afternoon wave of flights starts stacking up. By 6 pm, each terminal is over its limit of people. More than once, the fire alarm went off due to too many passengers waiting at the gates and blocking the walking area. Delays compound quickly and that tight connection you thought was fine suddenly isn’t. If CLT is in your itinerary, go early or go direct.
7️⃣ Rule #7 — Be Wary of DFW and ATL in the Afternoon During Summer
Dallas-Fort Worth in the summer afternoon is storm season territory. Thunderstorms roll in fast, ground stops happen without warning, and the ripple effect can strand you for hours. Always have a backup plan when routing through DFW between June and September. Same applies to Atlanta.
6️⃣ Rule #6 — Check the Weather BEFORE You Check In
This is one of the most underused moves in the Road Warrior playbook. If you check the weather before checking into your flight and spot a problem at a connection city, you can often change your routing at no cost. Once you check in, your options shrink fast. 5️⃣ Rule #5 — Never Buy the Lowest Possible Fare
That rock-bottom basic economy fare looks great until everything goes wrong. You can’t make changes. You don’t get a seat assignment. You sometimes don’t even earn miles. Pay a little more for a fare that gives you flexibility — because in travel, flexibility is everything.
4️⃣ Rule #4 — Pick an Airline and Be Loyal
You cannot expect an airline to go above and beyond for you if you’ve never shown them any loyalty. Pick one airline, build your status, and stick with it. When weather hits and delays happen — and they will — your status is what gets you rebooked first, upgraded to better options, and treated like a valued customer instead of a ticket number.
3️⃣ Rule #3 — Never Check Luggage Unless You Absolutely Have To
Checked bags are hostages. They get lost, delayed, misrouted, and they slow you down at both ends of the trip. Do you want to add an extra hour in each direction. Pack smart, pack light, and keep everything with you. The Road Warrior travels fast and moves freely.
2️⃣ Rule #2 — Get to the Airport Early Enough to Use the Club
This is a secret weapon most travelers overlook. Airline club staff are some of the most resourceful people in the building. When weather hits or delays cascade, club agents have consistently outperformed gate agents at finding creative re-routes and solutions. Your club membership pays for itself the first time you need it most.
1️⃣ Rule #1 — NEVER Argue at the Counter or the Gate
This is the Golden Rule of Road Warriors. Raising your voice, making a scene, or losing your cool at the counter will get you exactly nowhere — and possibly bumped to the bottom of the list.
Instead — while you are standing in that line — get on the airline’s app, start a chat, or call the 800 number. Let the humans in line deal with one agent at a time. You’ll have a solution before you ever reach the front.
Stay calm. Stay smart. Stay in control.

These rules weren’t written in a classroom — they were earned in terminals, across time zones, and through more delays than I care to count. The Road Warrior life has its challenges, but with the right rules in place, you’ll always find your way home.

What about carry your luggage when you can. So it’s easier to make changes if you need to switch a flight mid stream?
Agreed. Too many times, I have checked baggage, then found an earlier flight. The gate agents then tells me, sorry, can’t move you since you luggage is checked all the way through. It really limits your options once you check that bag.
