Introduction
Denver International Airport isn’t just a place to catch a flight — it’s an experience. From its iconic white tent roof that mirrors the snow-capped Rocky Mountains to its surprisingly deep collection of public art, DEN has a personality unlike any other airport in the United States. Whether you’re passing through on a connection or starting your Colorado adventure here, this guide will help you make the most of your time at DEN.
🏛️ The Terminal Experience
DEN operates out of a single main terminal — Jeppesen Terminal — connected to three concourses (A, B, and C) via an underground train. The train runs frequently and is quick, but budget a few extra minutes if you’re connecting between Concourse A and Concourse C.
- Concourse A — International flights + United hub gates
- Concourse B — United’s main domestic hub; largest concourse
- Concourse C — Southwest, Frontier, and other carriers
💡 Window Seat Tip: Concourse B has some of the best mountain views from gate-side windows on clear days. Grab a seat facing west for a stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop.
🍽️ Food & Drink
DEN has significantly upgraded its dining options in recent years. Highlights include:
- Root Down DIA (Concourse C) — Farm-to-table, locally sourced menu; one of the best airport restaurants in the country
- Elway’s (Jeppesen Terminal) — Classic Colorado steakhouse; great for a pre-flight splurge
- Modern Market (Concourse B) — Healthy, fast-casual Colorado chain
- Que Bueno! (Concourse B) — Solid Mexican food, great for a quick bite between connections
- Snooze A.M. Eatery (Concourse B) — Colorado breakfast staple; pancakes worth the wait
💡 Window Seat Tip: Prices are airport-inflated, but Root Down and Modern Market offer genuinely good food at reasonable prices by airport standards.
☕ Coffee & Quick Bites
- Starbucks — Multiple locations across all concourses
- Thirsty’s Tavern (Concourse B) — Local Colorado craft beers on tap
- Que Bueno! — Also serves quick snacks and drinks
- Dunkin’ — Available in the main terminal
🛍️ Shopping
- Colorado Creative — Great for local gifts and souvenirs
- InMotion Entertainment — Electronics and travel accessories
- Hudson News — Books, snacks, and travel essentials
- Tattered Cover Book Store — A beloved Colorado independent bookstore with a DEN outpost
💡 Window Seat Tip: If you’re looking for a Colorado souvenir, skip the generic gift shops and head to Colorado Creative for locally made goods.
🎨 Public Art & Architecture
DEN is one of the most art-forward airports in the world. Don’t miss:
- 🐴 Blue Mustang (“Blucifer”) — The famous blue horse with glowing red eyes outside the terminal; controversial but iconic
- 🖼️ Leo Tanguma Murals — Large-scale murals in the main terminal; thought-provoking and visually stunning
- ✈️ Tent Roof Structure — The Teflon-coated fiberglass roof of Jeppesen Terminal is an architectural marvel; best viewed from outside or upper-level departures
💡 Window Seat Tip: Arrive a few minutes early to walk through the main terminal art installations before heading to security. It’s worth it.
🛋️ Lounges
- United Club (Concourse B) — United Club members and eligible cardholders
- The Club at DEN (Concourse C) — Pay-per-use or Priority Pass access; comfortable seating, snacks, drinks, and Wi-Fi
- American Express Centurion Lounge — Not currently at DEN
- Delta Sky Club — Not currently at DEN
💡 Window Seat Tip: If you have a Priority Pass membership, The Club at DEN in Concourse C is a solid option for a quiet escape, especially during busy travel periods.
📶 Wi-Fi & Charging
- Free Wi-Fi available throughout the airport — network:
DEN Free WiFi - Charging stations located at most gate areas
- USB charging ports available at many seats in Concourses B and C
- Laptop-friendly seating most abundant in Concourse B near gates B30–B50
🚂 Getting Around the Airport
- Airport Train (AeroTrain) — Free, runs every few minutes between Jeppesen Terminal and Concourses A, B, and C
- Moving walkways — Available in all concourses
- Walking distances — Concourse B is long; allow extra time if your gate is at the far end
⚠️ Connection Tip: If connecting from Concourse A to Concourse C, allow at least 30–40 minutes minimum, especially during peak hours.
🚗 Getting To & From DEN
- Location: About 25 miles east of downtown Denver — further than most people expect
- University of Colorado A Line (Train) — Runs directly from Denver Union Station to DEN in about 37 minutes; costs ~$10.50 each way; highly recommended
- Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) — ~$35–55 from downtown Denver depending on time of day
- Taxi — Available but pricier than rideshare
- Parking — On-site parking available; economy lots recommended for longer stays
💡 Window Seat Tip: The A Line train is by far the best way to get to DEN from downtown. It’s affordable, reliable, and drops you right at the terminal.
🌄 The View From The Window Seat
Flying into or out of DEN offers some of the most dramatic aerial scenery in the country:
- Approaching from the west — The Rocky Mountains fill your window; try to grab a window seat on the left side (A seats) heading east
- Departing east — Watch the mountains shrink behind you; right side (F seats) gives you the best mountain views on departure
- Plains approach — The flat eastern Colorado plains stretch endlessly; surprisingly beautiful at golden hour
💡 Best Seat: On most approaches, left side window seats give you the best Rocky Mountain views coming in. Worth requesting at check-in.
🏁 Final Thoughts
Denver International is a genuinely interesting airport — one of the few where the building itself is worth exploring. The dining has improved dramatically, the art is world-class, and the A Line train makes it one of the most transit-accessible major airports in the US. The main drawback is its distance from the city and the size of Concourse B, which can make connections stressful if you’re tight on time. BUT you must find the outdoor areas in 2 of the terminals. IN the winter, 1 of the outdoor fire pits has a bar with seasonal adult beverage.
But if you’ve got a window seat on approach from the west? The Rockies will make it all worth it.
