Size Does Matter — How Big Are Wide-Body Jets, Really?
People ask me all the time — “But seriously, how big are those wide-body planes?”
I always struggle to put it into words. Feet and meters don’t really do it justice. Wingspan numbers don’t click. Even sitting inside one, it’s hard to grasp just how massive these machines truly are.
So I stopped trying to explain it.
I just started showing people.
The 787 That Swallowed a 737
That dark shape behind the Boeing 787 Dreamliner? That’s a 737.
A full-size, 150-passenger, commercial airliner — and the 787 is eating it alive. The 737 isn’t small. It flies millions of people every single day. But parked next to a wide-body, it looks like a regional jet at best.
The 787 Dreamliner stretches 186 feet long with a 197-foot wingspan. The 737? A respectable 138 feet long. On paper, that’s a 48-foot difference. In real life, it looks like a parent standing next to a toddler.
The A330 — Normal, Until You Spot the Human
Here’s a fun game. Look at this photo of an Airbus A330.
Looks normal, right? Just a plane on the ramp.
Now find the person.
Found them? That tiny figure standing under the fuselage is a full-grown adult. The A330 stands over 58 feet tall — that’s nearly a 6-story building on wheels. The fuselage alone is wide enough to fit two full aisles with room to spare.
We walk past these giants every day in airports and somehow never stop to think about just how enormous they really are.
The 777 — When a 737 Becomes Background Noise
And then there’s the Boeing 777.
The 737 in the background of this shot isn’t far away. It’s not a trick of perspective. It’s just that the 777 is that big.
At 242 feet long with a 213-foot wingspan, the 777 is one of the largest twin-engine aircraft ever built. The engines alone on a 777 are nearly 11 feet in diameter — wide enough to fit a full-grown person standing upright inside.
The 737 behind it? It’s doing its best. It just can’t compete.
